Bay Area Mini-Vacation: 3-Day Redwoods and Coast Plan
A concrete 3-day mini-vacation from the Bay Area: one house in the redwoods, forest in the morning, coast in the afternoon, and a plan that works for families and groups without overplanning.
Stay local, travel lighter.
You do not need a far trip to get a real family break. From the Bay Area, the Santa Cruz Mountains are close enough for an easy drive, while still giving you towering redwoods, coast access, and calmer evenings.

A mini-vacation from the Bay Area doesn’t need a week or a flight. It needs one place to stay, redwoods and coast within a short drive, and a simple 3-day plan so you spend your time outside and at the house — not in the car or on the phone. This is that plan: Friday to Sunday (or any 3 days) from one house in Boulder Creek, with forest in the morning and ocean in the afternoon when you want it.
Check available dates and book your base first; then follow this outline or tweak it to your group.
Why This Mini-Vacation Works
One house. The Crow’s Nest Retreat in Boulder Creek sleeps 12 in 5 bedrooms, with a hot tub, game room, fire pit, and full kitchen. You drive there once, unpack once, and every day you choose: redwoods, coast, or stay at the house.
Short drives. From the house, Henry Cowell Redwoods and Roaring Camp are about 15 minutes. Big Basin is about 20. Santa Cruz (Boardwalk, beaches, downtown) is about 30. So “redwoods in the morning, coast in the afternoon” is real — no marathon drives.
Under an hour from the South Bay. San Jose is about 45 minutes; the rest of the Bay is within 1.5 hours. So your mini-vacation starts the moment you leave the freeway and start climbing into the trees. Our driving guide has the exact routes.
Day 1 — Arrive, Settle, First Night
Afternoon: Drive to Boulder Creek. Check-in at the house (4 PM). If you didn’t bring groceries, Boulder Creek Market is about 5 minutes away — or pick up supplies in Felton or Los Gatos on the way. Our getting here guide has smart stops.
Evening: Unpack, explore the property, claim bedrooms. Keep dinner easy: grill, tacos, or pizza from Boulder Creek Pizza (~5 min). Then fire pit or hot tub. The first night is about “we’re here” — no schedule, just the house and the trees.
Rainy backup: Game room (pool, foosball, ping pong) and a cozy dinner inside. Rainy day activities for more ideas.
Day 2 — Redwoods in the Morning, Coast in the Afternoon
Morning: Coffee at the house, then head to Henry Cowell Redwoods (~15 min). The Redwood Grove Loop is an easy 0.8-mile walk — big trees, flat, stroller-friendly. For more of a hike, use our best hikes near Boulder Creek and Henry Cowell guide. Family option: Roaring Camp steam train through the redwoods, same area.
Midday: Lunch at the house or in Santa Cruz. If you’re heading to the coast, grab something on Pacific Avenue or at the Boardwalk.
Afternoon: Santa Cruz — Beach Boardwalk, Natural Bridges, or West Cliff Drive. Or skip the coast and do a second hike (e.g. Big Basin) or Boulder Creek town.
Evening: Back at the house. This is the night to use the kitchen — big pasta, grill, or sheet-pan dinner. Then game room (pool tournament, foosball) or fire pit and hot tub. Our perfect weekend itinerary has more detail for this day.
Day 3 — One More Adventure, Then Home
Morning: Lazy breakfast at the house. Pancakes, eggs, fruit — use the kitchen and the deck. No rush.
Late morning: One activity before checkout (11 AM):
- Big Basin (~20 min) — more redwoods, short or longer loops; see Big Basin guide.
- Roaring Camp — if you didn’t do it Day 2; schedules and tickets.
- Boulder Creek town (~5 min) — coffee, river walk, browse shops; things to do.
- Wineries — Beauregard or Bargetto, 15–30 min, for a low-key send-off.
Then pack up and drive home. You’re back in the Bay without losing the whole day to the road.
Adapting for Your Group
Families: Lean into Roaring Camp, Boardwalk, tide pools, and the house’s game room and fire pit. Keep drives short. See our kid-friendly 3-day plan.
Friends: Same structure — one big dinner, pool tournament, hot tub. Add wineries or Capitola if you like. South Bay to redwoods weekend plan has a similar vibe.
Couples: Quieter trails (Fall Creek, Big Basin), West Cliff walk, one winery. The house works as a quiet base for two.
